*** WARNING SPOILERS MAY AWAIT ON DYING ***
With a title like that, one suspected things would turn sour for the most famous of spies. In this new adventure, James Bond faces a formidable enemy who has kidnapped a brilliant scientist. Played by Rami Malek, this fearsome antagonist has a technological weapon and the future is more uncertain than ever for an MI6 agent.
But the audience hoped to see James Bond retire, and enjoy days away from gunfights and muscle fights. It won’t be like that. In the final minutes, James Bond sacrifices himself to save his daughter and her friend, by Lea Seydoux. A sad conclusion to the journey that began in 2006 with Casino Royale.
A meaningful ending?
During the conference with DifferenceDaniel Craig gives some details on this final sacrifice.
“I think it was important to create tragedy. The idea that there’s an insurmountable problem, that there’s more power at play and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. That’s Savin’s device. It kills the one thing Bond wants, which is to be with the people he loves, so why not do anything?” He explains that he can’t exist. Otherwise, he’d risk their lives, and that’s the last thing in the world he wants to do. It was an incredibly important part of unraveling the plot thread, because it couldn’t feel like a random act. There had to be weight, or it wouldn’t work. Without it, I don’t think we’d do it. We would have found another way to finish.”
Set a series?
Daniel Craig’s departure was recorded, although it was postponed. Dying can wait.. Hence, the franchise had no other option but to end the journey, as clearly as possible. However, this is good for the spy, who can now buy a new face and a new identity.
It’s not yet known who has been cast in the role, but it’s clear that MGM already has ideas in mind. Because as Daniel Craig pointed out, we can see the return of James Bond at the end of the credits. When and how? This remains to be explained. What is certain is that 007 has yet to say the last word.
