more and more French people rent their accommodation on Airbnb

The number of French people choosing to rent their accommodation to make ends meet increased by 30% in the second quarter of 2022 compared to the same period in 2019.
In a gloomy economic climate, a growing number of French people are deciding to make their accommodation profitable by renting it out on Airbnb. This is shown by data on the American platform published by The Parisian , covering the second quarter of 2022. According to the document, the number of new guests would increase by 30% compared to the same period in 2019. An approach that is often crowned with success in the context of post-Covid tourist recovery. Thus, newcomers to the platform can generate an average income nearly 40% higher than that of new hosts who joined Airbnb during the same period in 2019. Overall, all renters are profitable, as the average income in the second quarter of 2022 has grown by 35%, to over €1,550, according to Airbnb.
Of course, Paris is taking full advantage of the return of international tourism. However, less urbanized areas are enjoying renewed holiday appeal. Some departments are seeing the offer explode. This is the case in La Sarthe, where the number of guests is multiplied by 2.5 compared to 2019. In Yonne, the increase is 80%, 70% for the Gers and 60% for the Doubs. Drôme and Ain also experience jumps of more than 50%.

“THERE ISAs the cost of living continues to rise, purchasing power is a major concern for the French and it is not surprising to see more people capitalizing on their accommodation – usually their biggest expense – to host travelers and increase their income», analyzes Emmanuel Marill, EMEA director of Airbnb.
Good luck with groups and families
On the renter side, the platform is particularly popular with groups of five or more passengers (+60%) and families (+70%). In June 2022, the average price per person for a group trip (5 people and more) on Airbnb was €47.30 per night (for an average stay of 4.5 days).
As for destinations, cities near the Disneyland theme park, such as Ceres and Montevren, as well as areas with a rich cultural heritage, such as Villeneuve-Loubet (Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur) or Colmar (Grand Est) are particularly important to attract families .
